  • How do you feel when you look at a blank canvas?
  • How do you feel about putting a paintbrush into paint and then moving that brush on the canvas to make marks?
  • How do you feel about drawing something?

Those are just a few questions we will explore as we peel away the layers of fear that grip many people and prevent them from diving into the wonders of intuitive painting—a process where we talk a tiny bit about how colors work together and a whole lot more about how we feel about any given color and color combinations. We will learn how to claim the freedom that each painter has in terms of choosing colors that they feel like choosing, and allowing how we feel to separate from us as we gain new experiences that will cause our feelings to evolve.

We will also explore the idea of painting with magical realism, where principles of realism become abstracted and visible peculiarities become accentuated to the degree that we feel like abstracting and accentuating. We will pursue methods that help us paint loosely and without inhibitions. We will allow the the canvas to hold as much of our hurt, joy, angst, worry, relief, disappointment, heartache, hope, and other feelings that we are willing to put on it. In this class designed for artists of all levels, you'll learn and inherit the ways that I paint in terms of:

  • How I select my first layer of color
  • How I select additional layers of color
  • How I splatter paint
  • How I seek balance in terms of shapes, lines, and colors
  • How I sometimes do unusual things to the canvas (like hitting it with boxing gloves) in order to stay loose in the process
  • How I use letters and words (both in English and Korean) as design elements
  • How I deal with points in the process when I feel stuck
  • And most importantly, how I draw from my feelings to serve as my artistic muse to guide my painting process

  • Arrive & Settle: 9:00 :: Time to arrive, and settle in.
  • Class Segment A: 9:30-12:00 :: Class time with Jenny who will demonstrate and guide the 1st part of class.
  • Lunch & Stroll: 12:00 PM :: You can choose to brown bag it or take a stroll to one of the many hip and artsy eateries in the historic Artist's Village in Santa Ana, like C4 Deli, Chapter One, and The Gypsy Den.
  • Class Segment B: 1:30-4:30 PM :: Class time with Jenny who will guide the 2nd part of class.
  • Show & Tell, Clean-Up & Depart: 4:30-5:00 PM

  • 2 stretched canvases: 18 x 24 inches is a good size or something close to that size. If you are local, I also recommend making one of the canvases much larger, like 30 x 30 inches
  • 1 wood panel about the same size as one of your canvases: You can buy a cradled one like this or you can get someone you know to cut a piece of wood for you. A piece of found wood is ok too. It's just so you can experience what it feels like to paint on wood.
  • Acrylic paints in assorted colors (the more the better ... and make sure to bring colors that make you feel good). Any brand will work. Make sure to include black, white, red, blue, and yellow.
  • Acrylic inks: my favorites are Golden High Flow acrylics. Black and white are great ones to start with.
  • Paint palette
  • Paintbrushes in assorted sizes
  • Palate knife (or two or three): there are lots to choose from. This is a pretty standard one that lots of people start out with. Pick one that feels right to you. Eventually, you'll probably want to get several but you'll learn to use the one you get during class.
  • Baby wipes
  • Sketchpad or journal and pencil that you can write in and do practice drawings in
  • Fineline Precision Applicators (gauge 20)
  • Derwent Inktense Pencils (If you can just get one ink black pencil, that's all you need.)

  • Jenny will have her art and her books for sale.
  • Due to limited class size, the spot for this class is transferable but payment is non-refundable. Please read about this policy in our Studio Policies.
