Lace Ships
with Holly Mason Abston
1-Day Workshop on Saturday, June 8, 2012
in Studio CRESCENDOh

207 N. Broadway St., Suite L
Santa Ana, CA 92701

Join mixed-media artist Holly Abston for a very special 1-day workshop where she will teach you how to construct a medium-sized lace ship with very heavy construction wire. We will construct the ship, paint it, and sew the fabric panels to the ship. These are great fun to make and embellish and oh-so-lovely! Start looking for little bits of crochet, lace, netting, fabric, or anything else that you would like to see on your ship of dreams. Holly will supply basic materials to help you cover your ship but it would be that much more fun and special if you brougth things that make it special and unique to you.

SCHEDULE:

  • Arrive & Settle: 8:30 :: Time for students to arrive, and settle in.
  • Class Segment A: 9:00-12:00 :: Class time with Holly who will demonstrate and guide the 1st part of class.
  • Lunch & Stroll: 12:00 PM :: You can choose to brown bag it or take a stroll to one of the many hip and artsy eateries in the historic Artist's Village in Santa Ana, like The Gypsy Den.
  • Class Segment B: 1:30-4:00 PM :: Class time with Holly who will guide the 2nd part of class.
  • Show & Tell, Clean-Up & Depart: 4:00-5:00 PM

WHAT TEACHER WILL PROVIDE FOR EACH STUDENT

  • Thick construction-grade wire to make the ship frames
  • Sheer fabric
  • Paint

WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flat-nose pliers I(with some grip to them)
  • Sturdy wire cutters
  • Scissors for cutting lace and fabric
  • Small-gauge, easy-to-bend craft wire (for helping to hold your ship together as we construct
  • Cheap, small craft paintbrush that you don't mind ruining
  • Needle and thread
  • Any special pieces of lace or fabric that you'd like incorporated into the ship. (Sheer fabric looks fantastic on these ships because you can see the wire frame through the lace but any fabric you want to use will be just fine.) Also consider other things like millinery flowers, bits of old costume jewelry, beads, or whatever else you want.

NOTES:

  • Holly will have a limited number of art pieces available for sale.
