This class is about exploring the self. YOU.
It’s about acceptance.

It’s about making your mark.

It’s about self-reflection.

It’s about growth.

Join me as we practice making autobiographical art.  We’ll combine expressive painting and marking techniques with words and self-images.  We’ll explore the self, the good and the bad, and practice making our mark on the world. We’ll start telling our own story through images and powerful words.  We’ll banish our self-critic as we value everything we are and everything we can become.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING:

  • Your art journal
  • Your favorite pens, pencils, crayons, charcoal, any way to make marks on pages
  • Paint brushes
  • Palette knife
  • Old gift card for scraping
  • Rags
  • Paper towels & baby wipes
  • Acrylic paints in your favorite colors. Include titanium white and payne’s grey and raw umber.
  • Gesso (white acrylic)
  • Gel medium (I prefer matte, soft-gel)
  • Scissors
  • Any images and ephemera that speaks to you, including images that represent your favorite things and images you just like and that appeal to you.
  • 6 to 8 photos of YOU (at any age, try bringing some childhood as well as current pictures). Please make sure you have at least 4 or 5 that are printed out on regular paper. Some techniques that we are doing will not work on photo paper.  Make at least half of the photos large (the full size of the 8.5×11 paper) and they’ll be easier for you to work with. I find it easiest to use photos of myself where my mouth is closed (in other words, it can be hard to make teeth look good). I also find it easiest to use photos that are close-ups (i.e. you fill the whole frame and there is little background). For ONE of your photos, choose a close-up and blow it up the whole size of the page. Then in your software editing program, select: Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Threshold. Click OK. Use the slider on the left to adjust the levels of black & white, then print out the photo. If you don’t have software to do this, email me your photo and I will do it for you (dina@dinawakley.com). If you have questions about photos, please email me.

TEACHER WILL PROVIDE

  • Watercolor paper and other substrates
  • Stabilo marks-all pencils
