Dashes
Not all dashes are created equal. There is the regular short dash (that is created by pushing the key that exists in between the \"0\" key and the \"=\" key) which is known as the hyphen. The purpose of this shortest possible dash is to divide compound words.

The next dash that is slightly lengthier is called the en dash. On a Mac, the key command for creating an en dash is to push \"option\" and the hyphen key. The purpose of an en dash is to indicate ranges (e.g., a range of time, a range of dates).
En Dash: –
Example: We need 10–12 volunteers for the project.
The longest dash is called the em dash. On a Mac, it is created by pushing the \"shift\" key, and the \"option\" key and the hyphen key. This dash is inserted to create a pause or to allow a sudden change in topic without having to use a period. Kind of like an ellipsis.

Example: I don't like driving at night — especially when there's a lot of traffic.

"Seam" is a noun denoting the line that is created when Aisle/Isle "Aisle" means a narrow passageway, especially in a church or store. "Isle" means an island. Empathy/Sympathy "Empathy" is understanding what someone is feeling because "Sympathy" is feeling sorry for someone, even though you may not understand what he or she is going through. Dessert/Desert "Dessert" is a treat people often eat at the end of meal. "Desert" is an arid land with sparse vegetation. Disinterested/Uninterested "Disinterested" means to be objective or neutral. "Uninterested" means to be bored. Collage/College "Collage" is an artistic piece made up of bits of various papers, cloth, etc. "College" is an institute of higher education. Altar/Alter "Altar" is some sort of platform often at the front of a church or temple. "Alter" means to change something. Accept/Except "Accept" means to receive willingly. "Except" means with the exclusion of.
"Farther" relates to advancements in distance.
Example: After traveling all day, she knew she didn't have much farther to go.

On computers, most fonts are now spaced proportionally, where characters do not take up exactly the same amount of space. They take up proportional space. This is why it is now correct to add just one space between sentences.
